Care Homes – Pros and Cons

Care homes are also called nursing homes or residential care homes. It’s a combination of residential or nursing care, in which the resident is fully cared for by licensed medical doctors, nurses, aides and other professionals who are specially trained in dealing with the needs of the residents. These nursing homes are run by government agencies and sometimes by private organizations. These organizations provide both medical and social services to the residents in these homes.

Care homes have a number of advantages over hospitals. First of all, the residents are free from any form of confinement and even in some cases, they are able to go outside the premises whenever they like. Secondly, they are not under the regular supervision of doctors and nurses, thus giving them some independence. Thirdly, they are located in their own private neighbourhoods and thus giving the residents the feeling that they are still living at home. Moreover, they don’t require the constant presence of physicians and nurses.

Some disadvantages of care homes include lack of social interaction, limited facilities, low wages for the staff, crowded living conditions and many others. An alternative is home-based care which is also available as a live-in arrangement. Care homes might seem very attractive to those who are looking for a good home away from home. The disadvantage lies in the fact that the residents are away from their home and family which can be hard to get used to for older people.
