The strange tale that comes from Ardee is its amazing jumping church. Whilst this doesn’t happen on a regular basis, there hangs a tale that goes something like this.

In the 17th Century, the church inexplicably moved 3 feet. The story goes that a non-Christian soul was buried within its walls. This was something the church couldn’t stand, being consecrated ground, so, in the night, it jumped up and moved 3 feet so that the buried person was not inside it anymore.

Other reports suggest that there was actually just a severe storm that night, but the fact remains the church wall does indeed appear to have moved.

Evidence of this was discovered in an archaeological dig in the 1950s. The Church walls had clearly moved away from the original foundations. However, no remains were found indicating a body. Even if it was the storm, it’s a real testament to the builders of the church that it stayed in one piece!
