Key areas to maintain on your trailer

If you have a trailer, the chances are that you use it quite regularly. With that in mind, what are the most critical parts of the trailer maintenance regime? A thorough check must be made; the last thing that you want to happen is for the trailer to fail when you are out on the road network.   1. Tyres. Just as you would on your own car, check that the tyres are of the correct tread depth and the correct inflation level. Considering the amount of weight that the trailer will need to take its a very important that it is the same as the cars’ or better. If this is wrong, the trailer could slide from underneath you and pull the car with it.
  2. Lights. If you intend to make a journey at night, you need to have the lights working. If a fellow driver cannot see you braking, then they may drive into you. Check that the brakes on your car can deal with the increased load. A Trailer will put more significant pressure on them.

  1. Wheel nuts and fasteners. It should go without saying that the wheel should be secured onto the trailer. You do not want the wheel to come off at any point. Also, check that the fastings holding the loan in place are solid. A shed load is not a pleasant experience to have.
