How to use double-pointed knitting needles

For anyone who’s brand new to knitting, the thought of wielding even two knitting needles seems tricky. But did you know it’s quite possible to knit with up to five double-pointed knitting needles? Surprisingly, it’s much easier than it seems at first. Read on for a simple guide to knitting with double-pointed needles.

Why knit with double-pointed needles?

Double-pointed needles are especially great for knitting rounded or tubular-shaped items, such as socks, hats, or jumper sleeves, according to craft experts Love Crafts.

If you’re hoping to begin knitting, knitting kits can be a great timesaver, providing you with everything you need to get started. Have a look online for knitting kits which contain yarn, needles and a pattern for everything from a basic scarf through to a chunky winter sweater.

How do you do it?

Begin by casting on to just one knitting needle in the first instance. Once this is done, arrange the stitches purlwise from one needle to another, keeping the same number of stitches on each.

You’ll then need to add in another needle and continue adding stitches until you’re ready to add a fourth needle. Ensure all the stitches continue pointing the same way.

Once all four of the needles are slotted in, you can simply start knitting, starting at the first cast-on stitch. Keep a decent amount of tension, and the needles will stay where they are, creating a tubular creation. While it may feel fiddly on the first row, as the project gains stability, it will continue to get easier.
