Mental Health Training for New Team Leaders

Booking onto a mental health training course is a good start. However, just attending the training will get little out of it if some preparation is not done beforehand.

Think About Your Team First

Before attending take a few minutes to think about your team and jot down a couple of scenarios that have happened with them in the past. This could be a colleague who seems to be withdrawn from work, a conversation that has been particularly awkward with a colleague, or a situation where you weren’t quite sure how to respond. By reminding yourself of these scenarios prior to the training, you will be able to make connections with the course material and how you can use it in your work with your team.

Tell Your Team You Are Going

Just inform your team that you are taking a training course on mental health and that it is because you want to support them. It is best to say why you are doing the training and give a flavour of how you intend to use it. This removes any mystery and indicates that you care about their wellbeing. Then any subsequent conversations will be of a much higher quality.

Bring a Prepared Question

Most training courses leave time for Q & A’s at the end. So prepare 1 question in advance of your course that relates to your specific work situation. This will be far more useful to the trainer than a general ‘any other questions’ question.

Plan One Thing to Apply Straight Away

Decide on one skill that you will apply one week after returning to work, and do it really well. One skill well applied is worth more than 10 half applied skills.

Keep Your Certificate Somewhere Useful

Keep a record of your Certificate, your CPD and the renewal date for the course you have completed.
